HEAR IT FROM AN INSIDER.
Nearly three months in to his journey with Real Property Photography, we sat down with Viv (Real Property Photography Perth North) to ask FIVE questions on what it has been like so far as a franchisee and what his motivation was to becoming a professional real estate photographer.
1. What was your main reason behind choosing to join a franchise system as opposed to going at it alone?
After almost 20 years in sales and marketing with a publishing company both in South Africa & Australia, I retired when the Australian subsidiary moved offshore. I soon realised the lack of challenge and inactivity was not for me! I researched the market on & off for a number of months and in-depth for about 3 months, hoping to find a way of living out my childhood dream of doing photography professionally when I retired. I initially looked at real estate photography in Australia, the US & UK via internet searches, You Tube and by reading the (few!) available books on the subject via Amazon to get a feel for the market and the job itself. The more knowledge I garnered, the more I realized how difficult it would be to go it alone without a support system; in particular training (despite taking many thousands of pic’s over 60 years I had never really photographed any real estate in anger before), image enhancement (as you know, up to this time the Nikon purpose developed software was all I needed – I knew nothing about Lightroom, Photoshop or any of the other disciplines) and especially no outside support to fall back on when I needed reliable help at short notice. It was obvious that the market was becoming more demanding and moving into areas like HD Tours which is an area I knew very little about. I then turned my attention to photography franchises and, after many enquiries, could not seem find one that I considered would be a good fit for me…..until Real Property Photography popped up on my browser late one night. The rest as they say in the classics, is history!
2. How did you find the initial training? Do you feel that it adequately equipped you to operate your Real Property Photography franchise?
The training covered so much more than I was expecting. I was thinking mostly the coal face (of which we did hands on & very practical actual assignments, both residential & commercial), but also the back office system developed by Real Property Photography – after 2 months now, I can confidently say it is working for me and that I feel in control of all aspects of my business. The fact that we covered as much as we did at my own pace (and copious amounts of note taking!) is testament to your in-depth knowledge of your subject (and many others!), your good pre-planning & preparation and your knack of understanding what needed extra attention and what I already had a handle on. The two area’s I still feel challenged on are Video & Floor-plans but I am happy to note that, apart what I can do on my own, we will be spending time on both at the conference coming up in June.
3. Has the opportunity to become a Real Property Photography franchisee allowed you to capitalise on your love for photography?
More than I ever could imagine! Just to mention one aspect – I had always tried to do twilight shoots on our travels with varying results, the feeling of achievement on one or two recent twilight images are no less than Rembrandt must have felt when surveying his handiwork of some of his best masterpieces!
The light went on for me that night at Kings Park overlooking the Perth city skyline! (Not to talk about verticals & angles!)
As I am typing this, I have just taken a call from John Morrell, the twilight I did on Saturday. John phoned to say he received the pictures and the whole family loves them! This is why I love this work! What better reward to feed my love for photography even more (and be paid for doing it as well!)
4. Branding and marketing are crucial to the success of any business. Do you feel as though you have joined a brand that aligns with your personal ambitions for your individual franchise?
The best way I can answer that is to say that here, in Perth North (and further out as it has transpired), I am Real Property Photography – friends, family and especially customers see me that way. ‘nuff said!
5. And finally; If you could do it all over again, would you?
IN A HEARTBEAT!
